I. Building Updates
Hastings:
•National No Name Calling Week; week of activities starting Monday, January 24; starting with speaker from Youth to Youth; focus on being respectful to one another;
•Norman Shub coming to speak on February 10, at 7p.m. for parents; Raising Confident Children
Tremont:
•QSL ambassadors are doing activities for No Name Calling Week; lunch activities
High School:
•transition meetings with students in preparation for next year (sophomores and juniors)
•SOS group; national organization for suicide prevention; want to raise money and provide awareness activities
•Finding Kind; maybe focusing on girls' sports teams (counseling dept. working with athletic director) - tailoring program for those groups; contact Amy A. for more information; Nancy R. has a parent connection
•college series process beginning at the high school; Jeanne Gogolski comes to the freshman meetings; Mark Davis available to talk to middle school parents as well; electronic transmission process moving forward
•h.s. counselors will facilitate processing A Race to Nowhere with staff members using guided questions; panel discussion after evening showing
•reexamining shadowing: in addition to job shadowing OR as another option; Real World, Real Money (state-funded program/curriculum)
Jones:
•Super Sportsmanship Week; three advisory-day schedules with guest speakers; two days with lunch activities; themes to each day
•Parenting from your Heart: see Nancy R. for more information; still room for more people to be involved
•Rachel's Challenge; an attempt to have kids recognize of being connected to one another, being kind to one another; being presented at CSG tomorrow
Barrington:
•middle school mentoring of Barrington students
Greensview:
•parent book-talk across elementary buildings
Windermere:
•Hastings student doing presentation for elementary students (clean water program, fundraising)
Tremont:
•culture club (focus on diversity); may be across elementaries
•high schoolers coming in to work with 4th grade boys; working as mentors and positive role models
•IEPs/504s/IATs: how the process works and what is the counselor's role in that process; who to go to for assistance in the process; where to get information about current plans; related paperwork; where to find test scores/who's been tested
•counselor's role with new staff members in the building; how we can support new teachers (high school groups/meetings with new staff)
•what's allowed in terms of meeting with mentors, particularly when mentors are in other buildings
•paperwork: files, what goes where, is special ed different than 504/IAT Plan
•understanding the roles of counselors at different levels (spending time at each level to have a firmer understanding)
•information about Powerschool, how to use the information, scheduling, etc.
•where to go for information (academic, resources, departments)
•assistance for understanding schedules for full-time v. part-time employees
•referral process to outside agencies
•budgets
•supervision of counseling sessions; consultation of provided services (is this provided by mentors/someone in the building; particularly an issue at elementary level - how to access that support)
•documentation of student concerns, contacts
•Paul will be meeting with some administrators re: transition, so if any transition issues need addressed please contact Paul
•eled counselor interviews directors of local preschools; kindergarden screening (Dial R) - counselors are first to interact with the incoming students; counselors can take notes on behaviors that may be a concern; are present in kindergarden halls/classes during the first few days of school; kindergarden info night in February (parents may be school 'shopping' at that point)
•5th to 6th: counselor-to-counselor meeting; classroom visits of the middle school counselor to 5th grades are encouraged; having eled counselors attend middle school parent meetings is helpful, too; middle school counselors meet with 5th grade teachers; middle school counselors attend transition meetings (EIS); taking 8th graders over to talk with 5th graders; 5th grade special needs students do building visits with IS's
•8th to 9th: counselor-to-counselor mtgs; 8th grade goes to hs admin meeting; hs counselors visit middle school for registration; parent meetings; IS visitation with special needs students; fall meeting with 9th grade parents before school starts
•hs to college: 150-175 college admin counselors come to UA throughout the year; sometimes former UA students come to talk about their college/university; Mark goes into Government classes to get info from kids/inform kids; Miller/Botti - Senior Survival; panel of college students to talk about their experience; individual counselor conferences with seniors; would like to focus more on safety issues before students leave for school; College Weekly Live (virtual tours/college fair, discussion with college reps); college fair; Peggy
Moore also provides some information/assistance for students with special needs
IV. Subcommittee Updates:
•CISM
•There was a breakout session at AOCC that had a school-based CISM structure
•would like a flow-chart of what to do, who to communicate with, etc.
•Bullying Prevention
•Frank Tuttle does have the video; how long do we want it to be?; use of the Powerpoint presentation also?; would like some portion of the AG presentation in video form to introduce the idea of bullying, etc., and provide consistency between the levels; have a counselor rep from each level at each presentation; goal of getting staff to understand, recognize, report bullying issues; informing staff of what the counseling staff already does and how we can support them; share the district policy with staff members
•high school is working toward April to present to UAHS
•District Counseling Inservice Day (April 4th)
•any ideas/suggestions for topics and/or speakers, please contact MaryAnne, Clemy, or Sharon
•potential for professional development on special education (540/IAT Plans); Missy, coordinators, psychologists (potential guests)
