Building/Level Updates
District:
Concerns regarding new 504 directives shared including 1) new forms (no signatures if no plan is needed), 2) putting students with health plans on 504 Plans?, 3) identifying as handicapped w/o plans, 3) logistical results of the changes (e.g., housing of 'nonactive' 504 plans), 4) when and how to evaluate and update the plans/nonactive plans. High school is meeting with Missy Gordon, Hastings office team has met with her already. Consensus that middle schools and high school would best be served by having the same paperwork/process in this area.
Reflection on Barrington Elementary/emergency response: Great appreciation was shared from Barrington in terms of the assistance provided by various agencies (Northwest Cnslg, Schoedinger, Riverside Hospice, Mt. Carmel), but particularly the assistance provided by the district counseling staff. Parents and students seemed to respond very positively to the thought of working with people who are immediately connected to the district. Having "listeners" in the classrooms for the week was helpful for staff and students. Having written feedback from Erin B. was something that the district counseling department is very interested in (perhaps this could be addressed through the emergency response subcommittee).
Steve Phillips shared information regarding full-day kindergarden. Plan is for the district to apply for another waiver for the '11-'12 school year, but then regardless of what the plan is for full-day kindergarden at the state level, the district may opt to go toward full-day for the '12-'13 year. The goal would be for K-classrooms to be in their home elementary buildings, but would entail the hiring of new counseling staff.
will be offered this year. Talk with Nancy R. for more information.
High School: 9th grade conferences: very successful, positive comments from the students regarding transition to UAHS flex credit: proficiency tests in January in approx. 20 subject areas; important for 8th grade counselors to meet with high school because 8th graders could potentially sit for exams in June; Emilie G. will be putting together a letter regarding preparation for assessments PLC: looking at staff inservice and classroom activities with focus on bullying college center: moving toward paperless system
Middle Schools: service work: Hastings working with Greensview, building school in Afghanistan Red Flags: already presented at Jones; Hastings integrating smartboard into the presentation Mix It Up Day: at 6th grade level, November 9th, in both buildings classroom guidance: specifically on bullying at 6th grade in both buildings; 8th grade at Hastings 8th grade: counselors working on relationship issues between students at the two buildings
Elementary Schools: YES: only Wickliffe left to implement YES; discussed how there is a bullying component to the YES program cyberbullying: could be becoming an issue for the intermediate elementary students (4th and 5th graders - texting, facebook) cultural awareness: being addressed in terms of how it affects relationships between students (bullying) UAPD: presentation coming up on November 17th regarding cyberbullying at Barrington (contact Erin B. for more information) group counseling: interest from students has increased particularly at Windermere so work is being done on how best to meet the needs of all those interested
Accountability for staff development, materials, speakers very important as we want to be sure to document how are funds are used and the importance of having a comparable budget in the future.
Counseling Goals
Where do counselors fit in to PLCs, IBMYP, 21st century skills? Elementary counselors are working on a philosophy and mission focusing on the elementary level; middle school counselors are working on making classroom guidance lessons alighn with IBMYP/21st century skills; high school counselors would like to begin work on bullying with staff development (as suggested by the OSU team they worked with last year)
Early dismissal days, district staff development days: Need to come to a district consensus about who counselors work with during the MYPIB time (ex: October 18th). At this point in the MYPIB process, it is difficult to rationalize counselors spending time with specific content area groups as they work on unit/lesson writing. Erin M. will follow up.
counselors at each level piloting use: Concerns about the use of database included the privacy of electronic records (how FERPA applies to electronic record keeping), where/how the records are stored, and when are the records deleted. Idea of using the name, date, and contact type to document number of contacts without the use of the 'notes' section was shared. Also, suggested to add 'alerts' to prompt follow-ups with students.
CISM
last training in 2003: discussed CISM (or similar protocol) as part of what the emergency response sub-committee will be looking at for this year/next year. Be sure your information on the counseling department roster is up to date in the case of any emergencies that would involve the counseling department. Contact Cathy Hamilton directly to make those changes.
Sub-committee work: Meet with sub-committee prior to next meeting and share progress.
Inservice committee (April 4th) - S. Jones, T. Calcara, M. Nyeste, C. Keidan, B. Evans
Emergency Response (building level, district level, district inservice?) - N. Rapport, A. Banks, E. Bowden, H. Peebles, M. Davis, C. Shapiro
Bullying Education/Prevention K-12 (peer pressure, alcohol/drug use) - J. Allocco, A. Aspengren, S. Riley, P. Hysell, L. vanDoorn
